Newswire: John Cale is planning a Velvet Underground 50th anniversary concert in New York

John Cale, Velvet Underground co-founder and all-around musical badass, is planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Velvet Undergound & Nico, the band’s incalculably influential debut, with two special concerts at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music. Currently set for November 16 and 17, Cale will be performing all 11 tracks from the album along with members of the Wordless Music Orchestra and “special guests,” according to the venue’s website.
Cale will be performing a similar show this weekend at Liverpool’s Sound City festival, where he’ll be running through the album with guests like Clinic, Wild Beasts, and Gruff Rhys. He also put on a version of this concert last year in Paris, where Animal Collective and members of The Libertines helped him reimagine the Velvets’ groundbreaking debut.
These two New York dates are the only North American anniversary celebrations announced thus far. They’ll be followed on November 18 with a different show that focuses on Cale’s wide-ranging career, from his time with The Velvet Underground to his decades of experimental solo work.
