Gijsbert Kamer over Radiohead: So Fucking Special'

vk weblogWanneer viel ik eigenlijk voor Radiohead? Die vraag houdt Gijsbert Kamer al de hele week bezig. Of in ieder geval sinds hij dinsdag om drie minuten voor 12 de nieuwe 3Voor12 bezocht.

Iedere liefhebber van popmuziek kent de site neem ik aan, ga er anders snel naartoe, zeker sinds de site deze week vernieuwd is kom je er niet meer van af.

Een van de bakens van 3voor12 is de zogeheten Luisterpaal waar de redactie belangrijke releases (voor zover de artiesten daar aan mee willen werken) hangt, zodat eenieder nu bijvoorbeeld kan vaststellen hoe goed de nieuwe Blaudzun is, of hoe Keeswaardig de compilatie van Kees van Hondt eigenlijk is.

Op de nieuwe voorpagina van 3voor12 staat ook een link naar het concert dat Radiohead in 1995 gaf op het (derde) Lowlands festival.
Wat een idee trouwens om iedere week (hoop ik) een concert uit het immense VPRO radioarchief te lichten. Mogelijk dat dit optreden al jaren gewoon te beluisteren was op 3voor12, maar ik was er nooit op gekomen. Nu wel, en ik ben er heel blij mee.

Al luisterend vroeg ik me echter wel af, hoezeer ik toen zelf 'into' Radiohead was.

Niet erg nog, moet ik bekennen.

Zondagmiddag
Ik weet nog goed hoe en wanneer het concert plaatsvond. Het was op zondagmiddag (Thom Yorke zegt ook 'good afternoon, we're a band called Radiohead).

De deadline voor het Lowlands verslag dat ik samen met Gert van Veen zou maken, naderde. Volgens mij speelde rond diezelfde tijd ook nog Guided By Voices.

Ik heb van allebei nauwelijks iets gezien.

Raar eigenlijk dat Radiohead niet op mijn prioriteitenlijstje stond. Het was immers zomer 1995, de door mij zo geliefde Britpop tierde welig. Supergrass en Elastica hadden geweldige debuten uit. Blur en Oasis zouden met nieuwe albums komen, en ja, ook Different Class van Pulp, daar keek ik vol verlangen naar uit, want dat was op dat moment de band waar ik mijn geld op had ingezet.

En Radiohead dan? Was hun in maart dat jaar verschenen tweede album The Bends met dan niet bevallen? Ja hoor, best, alleen draaide ik hem eigenlijk nooit. Meer rock dan pop, denk ik.
Radiohead was trouwens wel bekend aan het worden. Ze werden veel gedraaid, vooral door de VARA, en ze verkochten ook behoorlijk.

Maar iets weerhield me ervan echt voor ze gaan, zoals ik voor Supergrass, Blur en Pulp ging.

Het zou nog tot Pinkpop 1996 duren voordat ik wel voor ze viel, dat moment weet ik nog precies. Ik draaide plaatjes tussen de bands op het 'kleine' podium (vergeet altijd welk van de twee Noord of Zuid was). Voordat Radiohead zo verschijnen draaide ik Champagne Supernova van Oasis. Ik vond het mooi dat het in ieder geval leek alsof de band had gewacht totdat de laatste tonen waren weggestorven. En daar stond Thom Yorke ineens met zijn gele pak.
Er volgde een pracht concert, dat volgens mij de definitieve doorbraak van de band in Nederland bezegelde.

Het zou nog een jaar duren voordat hun baanbrekende album OK Computer zou verschijnen. Ik weet nog goed dat ik een bandje met vijf nummers ervan kreeg, begin 1997, en dat in een walkman op de bank afdraaide. Ik wist echt niet wat ik hoorde. Die drums, dat geluid, die zang, wat een nummers!

Dat hakte er echt enorm in. Het concert dat Radiohead in juni 1997 in het Utrechtse Vredenburg gaf, rond de tijd van hun fameuze Glastonbury show was in mijn beleving een van de mooiste ooit.

Maar ik had gewaarschuwd kunnen zijn als ik in augustus 1995 goed naar Radiohead geluisterd had op Lowlands.

Want je hoort hier duidelijk een band voorbestemd voor grote dingen. Veel nummers van The Bends natuurlijk, maar ook nog doodleuk Creep als vijfde liedje, en ook al een vroeg versie van Lucky, een hoogtepunt.

Klassiekers
My Iron Lung, Street Spirit, Just: wat een klassiekers, denk ik nu. Dat ik daar niet eerder als een blok voor gevallen was.
Maar luisterend kun je nauwelijks bevroeden dat hier een band stond die nog minstens twee, misschien wel drie keer de popgeschiedenis zou doen kantelen.

Natuurlijk, eerst met OK Computer en de single Paranoid Android, maar in 2000 weer met het toen zeer experimenteel klinkende Kid A, en in 2007 eigenlijk nog een keer met hun 'internet-only' release In Rainbows.

Luister naar hun recente werk en je hoort nauwelijks raakvlakken met de rockband die op Lowlands in 1995 zo begeesterd aan het werk was.

Rommelig soms, maar erg gedreven.

Het ontging me toen alleen.

Ach ja, augustus 1995. Het was een paar weken voordat de 'oorlog' tussen Blur en Oasis losbarstte. Ik was voor Blur, en bleef roepen dat The Great Escape een betere plaat was dan (What's The Story) Morning Glory.

Niet waar, natuurlijk, maar ik vind de eerste Oasis nog altijd veel beter. En The Great Escape een stuk beter dan de geschiedschrijving ons nu wil doen geloven.

Maar het best van alles vond ik Different Class van Pulp, en waar het rockmuziek betrof, was ik echt verslaafd geraakt aan de dubbelaar van de Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness.

Radiohead had er prima bij gekund, maar nee, het kwartje was nog niet gevallen.

Nu geniet ik al dagen van dat optreden op Lowlands, en vraag ik me af welke band of plaat ik mogelijk vorig jaar zo aan me voorbij heb laten gaan als Radiohead.

Dwarse gitaarrock
Het gekke is, dat ik The Bends inmiddels tot mijn favoriete platen reken. Ik draai hem vaker dan OK Computer bijvoorbeeld.
Maar al luisterend naar het concert op 3voor12 vraag ik me wel een ding af: waar verloor Radiohead het plezier in het maken van dwarse gitaarrock?

En vooral: wie heeft Thom Yorke afgeleerd te rocken?

Ik mis de manier waarop hij in 1995 zong toch wel een beetje. Ook al had ik er zelf toen geen oren naar.

Maar goed, luister zelf zou ik zeggen.

Benieuwd welk concert volgende week uit het VPRO archief gelicht wordt. Want laten ze er maar een gewoonte van maken: wekelijks een legendarisch concert op de Luisterpaal.

Ik maak er wel een stukkie bij.....

Bonnie Raitt's "Slipstream" is due April 10. "Slipstream" is the 62-year-old slide guitarist's first album since 2005's "Souls Alike" and will be the first release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The 12-track album will feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she describes as experimental. The remainder of the album is self-produced with her touring band. She says she's thrilled with the resulting eclectic mix of blues, rock and soul that even includes a dash of reggae and Celtic sounds. She covers Bob Dylan's "Million Miles" and "Standing in the Doorway," and Loudon Wainwright III's "You Can't Fail Me Now" as well.

Today marks the fifteen year anniversary of Townes Van Zandt's passing. He died from Delirium Tremens, a fatal complication caused by alcohol withdrawal, the result of decades of substance abuse. Anyone whose ever suffered through it and survived, will know that it's just about the most miserable experience a person can go through. At the time of Van Zandt's death, I was thirteen years old. I had no idea who he was and couldn't have predicted how much he would impact my life.
But, Townes Van Zandt is the type of songwriter who will cut through the core. I discovered his music at the darkest point in my life, not long after I'd moved to Los Angeles. Los Angeles can be a very lonely place. Especially for someone like me. It is a city far from everything I'd known, not far off in reality of Bukowski's portrayal.

I was born and raised in a small farm town in the outskirts of Buffalo, NY. I didn't fit in. It was a lonely childhood.
My family had moved to the country from New York City. Coming from there, to a town where people are born and die without knowing much past the small radius of their existence, doesn't bode well for individuals. If you aren't from there, they don't take kindly to you. From elementary school on, I was treated like an outsider.I didn't share the same conservative views, didn't have the same reference points and wasn't respected or liked.
For eighteen years, the only people I could relate to were writers and musicians of the manic depressive or alcoholic variety. I didn't like Country music. In fact, I hated it. Everyone I grew up around liked it. I had a bad association with it. But in discovering people like Townes, I realize that wasn't really country music. Now it is pretty much all I listen to.
After graduating from college with a BA in Philosophy, I decided to move to LA. I thought the climate would improve my moods. What I came to realizes at first, was nothing could be further from the truth. For someone who spent four years studying ethics and morals, Los Angeles is the last place in the world humanitarian beliefs are likely to be implemented. It only magnified my feelings of isolation. Feelings I had to embrace.
Through the depths of despair, desolation and depression, I came to discover Townes Van Zadnt. The song that immediately resonated was "Waitin' Round To Die," the first song he'd ever written. It is a slow suicide set to music. I could relate.

Sometimes I don't know where this dirty road has taken me. Sometimes I don't even know the reasons why. So I'll just keep a gamblin', lots of booze and lots of ramblin', it's easier than just a-waitin' 'round to die. - Townes Van Zandt, "Waitin Round To Die"

There are few compositions that better capture the pain and turmoil that Townes suffered through. And at the time I heard it, I could commiserate. I was enduring many of the same afflictions Townes had. And before I even knew about his life, I could tell from his songs, he'd gone through the same things I was experiencing.

I use to sit alone in my apartment, listening to Townes. By nature, writers are solitary people. We have to be. But, for sometime, Townes kept me company. There was an intelligence to his songs intertwined with beautiful simplicity that captured my youth. I began realizing that rather than denying my country upbringing, it was a part of me. One that could live in harmony with what was going on inside my head and irrational feelings and emotions I never could figure out.
Shortly after discovering Townes, I met the first person in Los Angeles I could relate to. One of the few people in my then twenty-six years who understood me. I met this person in a hospital. We bonded over Townes Van Zandt. If someone understands Townes, chances are, there's something to it. And there was. We got each other through a lot. If not for Townes, it wouldn't have happened.
As it turned out, the experience of the circumstance, getting to know someone through illness, helped me overcome a lot of things, including the same type of self-medicating Townes did. But unlike Townes, I realized the pain I was suffering through wasn't something that needed to result in death. I could do something about it.
When I learned Townes died of the DTs, it was a wake up call. As romantic as it is to go through life thinking that your time would be short, it isn't something that is really as romantic in reality. Rather, it's sad. I realize that now. I no longer drink. I owe a lot of that to Townes.
In learning from his mistakes, ones that he really couldn't control without proper treatment, I got my life back. Though in someways he is a hero to me, he is also a person whose direction in life isn't one I wish to follow and today, I'd much rather be writing about Townes' new project, instead of reflecting on his short and tragic life.
But it is thanks to Townes that I was able to find my place in Los Angeles, and in life. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there, who can say the same. If it was his intention to die young and live on through his music, then he accomplished it. And as another one of my heroes in life, a man who did overcome the obstacles Townes didn't, Steve Earle said, "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that."

Gijsbert Kamer: 'ik zit weer in een Zappa-trip, waar ik dit jaar graag mee afsluit' OPINIE - Gijsbert Kamer − 30/12/11

Volkskrant-recensent Gijsbert Kamer moet opnieuw vaststellen hoe uniek Frank Zappa eigenlijk was, en hoe jammer het is dat hij eigenlijk zo weinig van invloed is op de hedendaagse rock 'n roll. Er wordt zelden aan hem gerefereerd, waarschijnlijk omdat zijn muziek gewoon te complex is gebleken.

Ik draai Frank Zappa soms maanden niet, er gaan zelfs wel eens jaren voorbij zonder dat ik de behoefte voel naar een van zijn platen of cd's te grijpen.

Maar als ik dan weer eens een plaat van hem opzet, dan wil ik ook meteen dagen niks anders meer.

Ach ja, Frank Zappa en ik. Ik leerde hem kennen dankzij Frits Spits, die in 1979 zijn Dancing Fool iedere avond in de Avondspits draaide.
Die dubbel-lp Sheik Yerbouti kocht ik, al trok ik er bijna de helft (Yo Mama bijvoorbeeld) helemaal niet van.
Maar 1979 was een productief jaar voor Zappa, nog geen half jaar later lag er Joe's Garage Act 1 in de winkels, en die vond ik meteen erg goed.

Ik werd dat jaar onder veel meer, ook fan van Frank Zappa, en kocht meteen kaartjes voor zijn concert in Ahoy', 24 mei 1980. Een datum die nog in mijn geheugen gegrift staat.

Ahoy
Het was mijn eerste Ahoy concert, en het maakte veel indruk. Van het concert maakte de VARA radio-opnamen. Het werd een keer in de Elpee Tuin van Willem van Beusekom integraal uitgezonden. Het cassettebandje daarvan heb ik lang gekoesterd, tot het een keer op school gepikt is (ik weet ook door wie, zoveel Zappa-fans waren er ook weer niet).

Goed, ik volgde Zappa toen op de voet, en ging natuurlijk ook terugluisteren naar die enorme catalogus die ik tot dan toe gemist had. Dat viel nog niet mee, want zijn eerste vijf albums waren al tijden niet leverbaar, en dus ook niet te horen.

Mijn liefde voor Zappa bekoelde ook nogal eens, veel van zijn latere werk (Jazz From Hell) vond ik stierlijk vervelend, ook zijn modern-klassieke werk zei me weinig.

Een periode in zijn werk die ik weinig aandacht heb geschonken is die van veertig jaar geleden, 1971, dus. Zeg maar, het jaar na de elpee Chunga's Revenge.

Dat is het jaar dat Mark Volman en Howard Kaylan zich bij Zappa en zijn Mothers Of Invention hadden gevoegd.
Het duo was afkomstig uit The Turtles, wiens lichtvoetige pop (Happy Together) haaks stond op de complexe muziek van Zappa.

Zij wilden wel eens wat serieuzers, en Zappa die zoals Ben Watson mooi beschrijft in zijn biografie The Negative Dialectics Of Poodle Play wilde de rockmuziek die in zijn oren wel veel te serieus en pompeus ging klinken van een beetje jolijt voorzien.
Wat hem vooral aansprak in Flo & Eddie, zoals Volman en Kaylan zich gingen noemen was dat ze een falsetstem hadden en ook goed in harmonie konden zingen.
De vorige zanger van de Mothers Of Invention, Ray Collins zong goed maar wilde nooit deelnemen aan koortjes. Flo & Eddie juist wel, en dat sloot mooi aan bij het idee dat Zappa had over de nieuwe koers van The Mothers.

Concertpodia
Flo & Eddie zijn het eerst te horen op de in november 1970 verschenen elpee Chunga's Revenge, maar hun cabareteske kwaliteiten die Zappa's nummers soms tot hoorspelen oprekten, kwamen het best tot uiting op de concertpodia.

Twee elpee's met concertregistraties leveren hiervan het bewijs: Live At The Fillmore East, June 1971 en het twee maanden later opgenomen, maar pas in juni 1972 uitgebrachte Just Another Band From LA.

Prachtig hoe The Mothers in The Fillmore na een hoop kolder ineens Happy Together inzetten, al zal dat voor het publiek wel even slikken zijn geweest. Dat adoreerde Zappa juist als voorganger in de 'tegencultuur', een mooi tegenwicht voor de commercie en de hitparade-pop. Iets waar Zappa zelf overigens niet om gevraagd had, daarom was hij zo blij met Flo & Eddie.

Ook bijzonder, de mini-opera, Billy The Mountain die de hele eerste plaatkant van Just Another Band From LA beslaat.
Maar het kan nog langer.
Het nummer duurt drie kwartier op de onlangs verschenen cd-box Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Carnegie Hall.

Dit is wat mij betreft het beste bewijs voor de bijzondere kwaliteiten van de band van Zappa in 1971.
Het betreft de integrale registratie van twee concerten die Zappa met zijn Mothers gaf op 11 oktober 1971 in de New Yorkse Carnegie Hall.

Twee totaal verschillende concerten, een om half acht en een om elf uur 's avonds. En ze vormen beslist een belangrijke aanvulling op de enorme hoeveelheid al beschikbaare live-opnamen van Zappa.

Flo & Eddie krijgen alle ruimte, Zappa zelf stelt zich meer op de achtergrond op. Zijn even beroemde als beruchte gitaarsolo's blijven goeddeels achterwege.
De nadruk op aan vocale hoogstandjes hier, begint al met het voorprogramma: de prachtige medleys van doo-wop combo The Persuasions.
Die vijfentwintig minuten, staan ook op de vier cd's en worden gevolgd door meer dan drieënhalf uur kolder afgewisseld met sublieme rock van The Mothers Of Invention.

Sofa, Sharleena, The Mud Shark, Who Are The Brain Police?, Anyway The Wind Blows: ze krijgen allemaal een bijzondere uitvoering.
Maar de versie die het gezelschap van Billy The Mountain neerzet is helemaal knap. Zappa staat dan al een kleine drie uur op het podium. Hij vraagt het publiek ook om stilte want het is een ingewikkeld stuk, dat anders dan je zou denken, volledig uitgeschreven is. Grappig ook dat het nummer met herkenningsgejoel wordt onthaald, terwijl er op dat moment nog geen versie van op plaat stond. Zo volgzaam waren zijn fans blijkbaar, ze kenden het gewoon al van andere concerten.

Toegift
Als het een kleine vijftig minuten later voltooid is, lijkt Zappa zo in zijn nopjes dat hij zelfs een toegift wil geven, ook al zou hem dat op een door de vakbonden vastgestelde boete van zeshonderd dollar komen te staan. Hij grapt nog even 'terwijl de vakbonden hun extra inkomsten tellen' maar zet wel doodleuk een mooie Mud Shark in.

Ik geniet nu al een paar weken van deze prachtconcerten, en grijp nu weer terug naar andere platen uit die periode die me eigenlijk altijd een beetje ontgaan zijn. Ik hield altijd meer van de iets eerdere of juist latere Mothers, met George Duke.

En ik moet opnieuw vaststellen hoe uniek Zappa eigenlijk was, en hoe jammer het is dat hij eigenlijk zo weinig van invloed is op de hedendaagse rock 'n roll.
Er wordt zelden aan hem gerefereerd, waarschijnlijk omdat zijn muziek gewoon te complex is gebleken.

Brand
Nog even iets over 1971. Na het Carnegie Hall concert (waarover ik in de Zappa biografieën niks heb gevonden) zou Zappa naar Montreux afreizen waar tijdens hun optreden brand zou uitbreken (zoals bezongen in Deep Purples Smoke On The Water) en krap een week later, op 10 december wordt Zappa door een 'fan' die meende te bespeuren dat Zappa oogcontact met zijn vriendin maakte, de concertbak van de Londense Rainbow in geduwd, met een revalidatie in een rolstoel als resultaat.

Een slechte afloop van een artistiek bijzonder jaar.

De box kost anders dan door een eindredactioneel slippertje in de Volkskrant stond, 55 euro, en geen 25.

Ik ben er erg blij mee, ik zit weer even in een Zappa trip, waar ik dit jaar graag mee afsluit.

Prettige jaarwisseling, en een voorspoedig 2012 met veel mooie muziek toegewenst.

Ms. McGarrigle wrote 20th-century parlor songs: folksy-sounding, latter-day descendants of Stephen Foster tunes, hymns, waltzes and popular arias. They often featured vocal harmonies from Anna McGarrigle, her older sister, fellow songwriter and performing partner since the 1970s, and from other family members in the studio and onstage. Yet within those cozy settings, Ms. McGarrigle was bold and sophisticated, musically and emotionally.
Her structures skipped beats, made sly harmonic turns and took startling melodic leaps. Her lyrics could be wry and flinty or painfully intimate, like her biting, tearful and terse “Go Leave”: “She’s better than me/Or at least she is stronger/She will make it last longer/That’s nice for you.” In songs like “First Born” and “Walking Song,” Ms. McGarrigle was also the rare pop songwriter who addressed not only love and romance but also family and long-term companionship.
Family and friends surrounded the McGarrigle sisters in shows like the one recorded for their 1998 album, “The McGarrigle Hour,” and their Christmastime concerts. This tribute concert — which was filmed for a documentary — was one more reunion, fond with glimpses of mourning. The lineup included Kate’s children, Rufus and Martha Wainwright; her sisters, Anna and Jane McGarrigle; and Sloan Wainwright, Rufus and Martha’s aunt. There were also collaborators and admirers, among them Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Justin Vivian Bond, Krystle Warren and Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons).
Along with the Wainwright siblings there were other second-generation songwriters: Teddy Thompson and Jenni Muldaur. Anna’s husband and two children also joined in, and the backing band included the longtime McGarrigle sidemen Chaim Tannenbaum and Joel Zifkin. It was a large, motley ensemble; Mr. Wainwright wore a sequined tuxedo, and the other musicians sported rhinestone accessories.
The songs were all by Kate McGarrigle with a handful of exceptions: “Over the Hill” and “Swimming Song” by Kate’s ex-husband, Loudon Wainwright III; Ms. Harris’s own farewell to “Darlin’ Kate”; and two Anna McGarrigle songs, “Heart Like a Wheel” and “Kitty Come Home,” which was written in the 1970s as a postdivorce welcome for her sister but on Friday became an angelic elegy.
The set included Mr. Thompson performing “Saratoga Summer Song,” an early-1970s tune unearthed for “Tell My Sister” (Nonesuch), a new McGarrigles collection. And it included the last song Kate McGarrigle wrote, “Proserpina,” retelling the myth of Persephone for its tension between a prodigal daughter and her baleful mother. Its introduction was the frail recorded voice of Kate herself, with Rufus Wainwright taking over.
The music got the familial treatment: vocal camaraderie with a constantly changing cast of harmonizers, and thoughtful, homespun arrangements that alluded to bygone styles and always had a clarinet or a banjo on hand when needed. But instead of Kate McGarrigle’s voice, with its reedy understatement that could be tartly matter of fact or openly heartsick, there were other approaches: Antony’s tragic intensity (perfect for “Go Leave” and “I Cried for Us”), Ms. Jones’s relaxed melancholy (in “Over the Hill”), Ms. Warren’s contralto resolve (in “I Don’t Know”). Mr. Wainwright slowed down his mother’s tunes, crooning them with an operatic sustain that moved them toward the art song; Martha Wainwright gave hers a tinge of vaudeville sultriness.
Ms. Wainwright took on songs that drew their lessons from intra-family messages: “Tell My Sister” and, among the encores, “Matapedia,” which begins with a middle-aged man briefly mistaking the young Martha for his memories of her mother. “My mom wrote this song about me and other things,” she said, introducing it. At McGarrigles concerts with her mother, she continued: “I sang backup on this for a while. And I wish I weren’t here singing the lead on it.”

Folk singer and songwriter Kate Wolf died of leukemia 25 years ago, on December 10, 1986. She was only 44 years old, but during her short life she made a strong impact on the folk scene. Her gentle and soulful songs have been covered by artists like Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris – whose version of Wolf's "Love Still Remains" was Grammy-nominated.

Ten years after Kate Wolf's death, fans who still missed her organized the Kate Wolf Retrospective Concert, benefiting public radio and the Leukemia Foundation of America. The outdoor festival featured more than 15 acts and drew 1200 concertgoers. The success of the event spurred an annual Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival – in 2011, the three-day lineup included luminaries like Taj Mahal, Bruce Cockburn and Los Lobos.

Each festival traditionally ends with the Kate Wolf song "Give Yourself to Love." For those who aren't familiar with Kate Wolf, we recommend this beautiful tune. Maybe once you listen, you'll be inspired to attend next year's festival.

AMSTERDAM – Fleet Foxes uit Seattle is uitgegroeid tot een van de grootste folkbands van de laatste jaren. Een plekje in de haast uitverkochte HMH in Amsterdam is dan ook dik verdiend. Maar dat het niet de juiste locatie is, blijkt dinsdagavond.

De zeskoppige formatie wisselt vanavond gretig af tussen oud materiaal van Sun Giant plus het naamloze debuutalbum en werk van het laatste schijfje Helplessness Blues. De muziek wordt bovendien versterkt door abstracte visuals.
Fleet Foxes maakt al na de eerste paar nummers zijn livereputatie meer dan waar: de samenzang van zanger Robin Pecknold en zijn bandleden is loepzuiver, de instrumentale partijen zijn strak en bevatten genoeg dynamiek om niet te vervelen.

Ook Pecknold zelf speelt met dynamiek, bijvoorbeeld bij Your Protector en Ragged Wood. Van verstilde solozang vermengt hij zich moeiteloos met de golf van geluid die zijn bandleden vervolgens tot stand brengen.
Hoewel het publiek zich vanavond goed lijkt te vermaken, lijkt de band zelf minder enthousiast. Pecknold brabbelt korte, onverstaanbare opmerkingen naar het publiek en probeert niet te reageren op kreten uit de zaal.

Irritatie

Wat verder tot enige irritatie kan leiden, is het trage tempo waarin een groot deel van de set wordt gespeeld. Soms lijmt de band twee tot drie liedjes ongemerkt aan elkaar, maar vaker nemen ze rustig de tijd voor het opvolgen van een nummer.
Fleet Foxes sluit af met een sterke toegift. Pecknold zingt in zijn eentje het prachtige nieuwe nummer I Let You en heeft de muisstille zaal in zijn greep. Met Sun It Rises, Blue Ridge Mountains en Helplessness Blues wordt geëindigd.

Ongemakkelijk

Op de kwaliteiten van Fleet Foxes valt niets aan te merken en een band die een volle HMH kan stil krijgen verdient natuurlijk alle lof. Maar de sfeer was ongemakkelijk door de grote afstand met het publiek.
Zo blijkt de HMH qua omvang zeker de juiste plek voor Fleet Foxes, maar zeker niet qua sfeer en vorm. Vanavond lijkt Fleet Foxes het touren beu te zijn.

Bob Dylan bezweert en fascineert in Ahoy

Zelden zal je zoveel verschillende meningen op twitter en facebook zien als na een avondje Bob Dylan voor een groot, gemengd publiek – een dubbele bill in Ahoy met oud-Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler als tweede publiekstrekker. De een vond Bob briljant, de ander verschrikkelijk. Knopfler was veel beter, Knopfler was slaapverwekkend. Bob zong goed, Bob zong niet maar kraaide. Bob speelde geen hits, Bob speelde de beste setlist sinds jaren op Nederlandse bodem. Een magische avond voor de een, een desillusie voor de ander. Een ding is duidelijk: Bob Dylan brengt op zijn zeventigste nog heel wat teweeg onder het Nederlandse concertpubliek.

Ondanks de topaffiche van vanavond – eerst vijf kwartier Mark Knopfler, dan vijf kwartier Bob Dylan en beide heren wisten in een vorig leven De Kuip nog te vullen – is de Ahoy niet helemaal uitverkocht, al zullen toch zeker een man of tienduizend de gemiddeld zeventig euro voor een kaartje wel hebben neergelegd. Die zien allereerst Knopfler een technisch perfect, maar verder weinig aantrekkelijke set spelen. Een enkel splinternieuw nummer, veel materiaal van zijn soloplaten uit de laatste tien jaar (met de titelsong van Sailing To Philadelphia als positieve uitschieter, normaal opent hij met het uitstekende What It Is van diezelfde plaat maar die laat hij nu achterwege) en So Far Away als verplicht Dire Straits-nummer aan het eind. Het valt op dat Knopfler al maar dieper in de rootsmuziek afdaalt, met een podiumbezetting variërend van drie tot acht man en viool en fluit even prominent in het geluid als ’s mans onnavolgbare gitaarspel. Fout- en pretentieloos gebracht, maar allesbehalve opwindend. De vele fans in de zaal zijn echter tevreden met dit bijna volledige concert en na afloop schieten zowaar enkele tientallen koppen al richting garderobe; hun avond zit er op.

Deze mensen missen een klein halfuurtje later de meest bezielde Dylan die we de laatste tijd op een Nederlands podium getroffen hebben. De poet laureate van de rock & roll volgens de aankondiging, maar in realiteit gewoon de hardest working man in showbusiness, die nog met gemak vijf keer per week optreedt en niet als een trofee op het podium staat, maar op orgel, gitaar en harmonica een actieve rol in het bandgeluid opeist. Met een hoofdrol voor zijn stem, die hortend en stotend en zonder notie van toonhoogte of dictie zijn teksten de zaal in blaast, onherkenbaar haast en toch typisch 21st century Dylan. Het draait immers om de timing en felheid en die zijn vanavond van bijzonder hoog niveau. Al 23 jaar duurt zijn Never Ending Tour voort (noem die term vooral niet in ’s mans bijzijn) en hoewel de setlist bij elk bezoek aan ons land twee liedjes korter wordt, neemt de entertainmentwaarde van een Dylan-show alleen maar toe.
Zo hebben we de man de laatste jaren nog nooit zo vaak vanachter z’n veilige toetsenbord vandaan zien komen. Gelijk na de laatste tonen van opener Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat grijpt hij naar z’n gitaar om It Ain’t Me Babe te spelen. En ook tijdens opvolger Things Have Changed blijft hij center stage staan, maniakaal zingend in een heuse rock & roll pose, om z’n statement kracht bij te zetten met enkele woeste flarden mondharmonica. Aan spotlights doet Dylan niet en z’n grote witte hoed werpt, geholpen door de bescheiden podiumverlichting, een grote schaduw over zijn ogen, maar we hebben in drie nummers al meer beweging van de man gezien dan tijdens drie shows in de HMH in 2009. De hele set lang blijft hij een beetje heen en weer schipperen: van oude krakers (Highway 61 Revisited, A Hard Rain’s A-gonna Fall) tot recent werk (succesalbum Modern Times uit 2006 wordt vertegenwoordigd met drie songs, “Love And Theft” uit 2001 met twee), van keyboard tot microfoonstandaard, van innemend muzikant tot bezweerder van het kwaad. Hij ziet er, staand, snerend, iets door de knieën gebogen en van onder zijn hoed loerend naar de zaal, voor het eerst sinds tijden uit als een gevaarlijke Dylan. Zo iemand die je voor weinig geld een duur horloge wil aansmeren, dat er na een uurtje tikken weer mee ophoudt. Net zoals hijzelf.

Als Bob Dylan na vijf kwartier veilig vanachter z’n toetsen de avond afsluit met All Along The Watchtower en Like A Rolling Stone, heeft de Ahoy er een opmerkelijke avond opzitten. Opvallend veel first-timers en toevallige passanten, al dan niet door de komst van Knopfler over de streep getrokken, schudden de hoofden en zuchten eens diep. Zij hadden wellicht gehoopt de geëngageerde folkzanger of relirocker aan te treffen, met zijn gitaar, zijn lange halen en zijn diepgravende teksten. Zij hadden geen idee dat Dylan’s vocale en instrumentale benadering van zijn werk de laatste vijftien jaar wezenlijk is veranderd van de oude standaard. Misschien hebben ze de twee afsluitende klassiekers niet eens herkend, wat niemand aan te rekenen valt, maar de goede verstaander was vanavond wel degelijk op z’n plek in Ahoy. Wie deze Dylan op waarde weet te schatten, zag namelijk een boeiend optreden, gedrevener en feller dan de laatste vijf Nederlandse shows bij elkaar. Ondanks het gebrek aan welke emotie, uitdrukking of interactie met het publiek dan ook, was Bob Dylan duidelijk in z’n element. Zingen is één, en alleen naar de man luisteren is zelfs voor de grootste fan een opgave, maar brengen is twee. En als dat laatste in orde is, dan wordt beleven een lust en een must. Bob Dylan bezorgde hen die het wilden zien een fascinerend concert. Moge de vroege vertrekkers van vanavond en niet-overtuigde twitteraars voor eeuwig troost vinden in de nieuwe plaat van Mark Knopfler.

John Cipollina played in a lot of bands. Quicksilver Messenger Service remains the best known, of course, but the lean, intense guitarist from Mill Valley also led or gigged with more than two dozen other, mostly short-lived groups, from Copperhead, Terry and the Pirates and Raven to the Dinosaurs and an early edition of Zero.
"I saw them all," recalls Antonia Cipollina, John's younger sister (by nine years) and the force behind Recoil, a newly released triple-DVD set that makes a compelling case for his musical legacy.
It leads off with the 1991 documentary Electric Guitarslinger, hastily produced for screening at the Mill Valley Film Festival not long after his death from emphysema at the age of 45. Along with archival interview clips with Cipollina himself, it offers early memories from his twin sister and their mother, along with comments from a host of musical associates.
The documentary also has a fascinating section in which Cipollina's unusual technique—combining finger picks with aggressive use of the whammy bar on his favorite guitars—is explained and demonstrated.
Disc two of the package includes interviews with a long list of John's musical contemporaries, among them Jerry Garcia, Barry "the Fish" Melton, Occidental's Nick Gravenites, Merl Saunders and Jack Casady, while the final disc consists entirely of concert videos, most of them never before available. This footage captures John performing with a half-dozen different lineups, from the Dinosaurs' appearance at the 1987 "Summer of Love" 20th anniversary festival all the way back to a 1973 Winterland jam.
A remarkable rarity is the clip from a 1974 San Francisco date when Cipollina sat in with one of his earliest influences, Link Wray. "Link and John had a really special friendship," his sister says. The two were introduced to each other by bassist Hutch Hutchinson, then part of Copperhead, who surprised John by having Link show up unannounced at his house. "They immediately became friends and started playing together," Antonia adds. "You can see in the footage how excited [John] is to be able to be playing with his idol."
But finding usable film of the original Quicksilver proved more elusive. Even after a new remastering job, courtesy of Wolfgang's Vault, which owns and shared much of the performance film featured in the DVD set, the loose version of the signature Quicksilver song, "Who Do You Love," is "still pretty iffy," Antonia offers, "but it was all we could get of Quicksilver. The old stuff, just four guys without Dino [Valente], was so flashy with the strobe lights you couldn't really see enough of the band to get anything. So we had to move to the next era, when Dino was part of it, which I would have liked to avoided, but we had no choice."
As that comment suggests, the demise of Quicksilver—which continued without John after Valente joined and, some say, commandeered the band—left a bitter aftertaste. Aside from a comfortable, laughter-laced interview with founding band mate David Freiberg—and brief comments from Gary Duncan and short-time QMS member Nicky Hopkins—the history of that seminal band is deemphasized in favor of recollections of Cipollina's personality, his quirks and talents.
"He was a soft, gentle man with an amazingly wicked sense of humor, very smart. He could tell amazing stories," Antonia remembers wistfully. "A lot of people have a sense of rock and rollers as being kind of down and dirty, but John was not that type of guy at all. He wasn't a womanizer. He was kind, he listened and liked to talk." Cipollina especially liked to talk about his gear, such as the monster multi-amp set-up he invented, notable for the row of brass horns that glistened atop it.
Even while Quicksilver was going strong, John's love of playing led him into a burgeoning schedule of sessions with other musicians, in situations as varied as the folk duo Brewer and Shipley, jazzman Charles Lloyd and Welsh hard rockers Man. Ready to play almost anytime the opportunity arose, Cipollina touched an uncountable number of other musicians, serving as a unusually accessible mentor and inspiration to many.
But despite that, his sister sighs, her voice touched with pride, "There's nobody yet who could sound like John."

Great performance of Fleet Foxes at La Citadelle (Arras). See photo of the lead singer: Robin Pecknold and en Skyler Skjelset. Robin is one of the best rock/pop/folk singers of all times. Skyler is one of the best gitarists of this time.

We were impressed and will see them again in HMH in Amsterdam on November 29 2011.

ZWOLLE - Bescheiden toont hij de vele prijzen die hij zondag won. Maar de jonge Zwolse mandolinist Ferdinand Binnendijk (19) was afgelopen weekend tijdens het Prinses Christina Concours Oost in Enschede onbetwist de favoriet. Het concours is een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement dat een platform biedt aan jonge muzikanten.

Ferdinand speelde 'Variations on a Basque melody' van Victor Kioulaphide. Dat leverde hem naast de eerste prijs in de categorie voor conservatoriumstudenten ook nog de publieksprijs op en de wisselbokaal die werd uitgereikt door de winnaars van vorig jaar. Dat een mandolinist het concours wint is bijzonder. Ferdinand: "In Nederland is de mandoline een vrij onbekend instrument. Er zijn maar vijf professionele beoefenaars in het hele land." De ambitieuze eerstejaars student van het ArtEZ conservatorium hoopt zichzelf straks ook onder die selecte groep te kunnen scharen: "Dat is wel mijn droom. Ik wil uiteindelijk graag als solist spelen met verschillende orkesten, en misschien nog een opleiding tot dirigent volgen." Gezien Ferdinands loopbaan tot nu toe is dat geen ondenkbaar toekomstperspectief: "Al vanaf mijn vierde ging ik met mijn moeder mee naar gitaarles. Zelf mocht ik dan van de leraar mandoline spelen. Dat ben ik mijn hele leven blijven doen en zo is het gegroeid tot wat het nu is." Het Christina Concours in Enschede was de eerste in een reeks van zes regionale edities. In april mag Ferdinand opnieuw zijn talenten laten zien in Den Haag. Dan strijden de regionale winnaars om de landelijke titel. Dat Binnendijk zo ver is gekomen dankt hij aan zijn vriendin: "Zij attendeerde me op het concours en toen heb ik me opgegeven. Ze doet zelf mee met het concours in de regio noord, dus het zou wel heel gaaf zijn als we straks samen in de landelijke finale staan."

Up to their concert in In the Woods in Lage Vuursche (The Netherlands) I knew a little of Anna Coogan. Last year I read about her on one of the music sites and listened to "Crooked Sea" on You Tube. Last Friday Anne Performed in In the Woods in Lage Vuursche with the Italian gitarist Daniele Fiaschi

The concert was fantastic. From her website: "Anna Coogan's bittersweet Americana has enchanted listeners since she began writing her own songs in early 2002. A trained opera singer and field biologist, Anna translates her love for desolate landscapes, dark alleyways, and neon valleys into simple, sweet melodies."

Soon Anna will fly back to Seattle. But she comes back in Spring 2011.

Rolling Stone and several other sources have reported that Don Van Vliet, the notoriously reclusive rock legend best known as Captain Beefheart has died today (December 17, 2010)
According to the article on Rolling Stone's website:
Don Van Vliet, who became a rock legend as Captain Beefheart, died today from complications from multiple sclerosis in California. His passing was announced by the New York-based Michael Werner Gallery, which represented his work as a painter.

His Trout Mask Replica was number 58 onRolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time....

"Don Van Vliet was a complex and influential figure in the visual and performing arts," the gallery said in a statement. "He is perhaps best known as the incomparable Captain Beefheart who, together with his Magic Band, rose to prominence in the 1960s with a totally unique style of blues-inspired, experimental rock & roll. This would ultimately secure Van Vliet's place in music history as one of the most original recording artists of his time. After two decades in the spotlight as an avant-garde composer and performer, Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself wholeheartedly to painting and drawing. Like his music, Van Vliet's lush paintings are the product of a truly rare and unique vision."

Craig Young has posted a bit more information about his career and the circumstances of his death HERE but, to me, the more important story is the impact Captain Beefheart had on his fans and his fellow artists. Back when I was still heavily into grunge and metal with a little rap and classic rock on the side (years before I discovered Americana, whatever that is), I stumbled across an ancient vinyl record of Trout Mask Replica, and from the first notes of "Frownland" my perception of what rock and roll is and could be was forever changed. I also credit Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and a few others with helping me out in this regard, but Beefheart was the first. Without him, I probably would have never checked out Tom Waits or half of the artists I love today.

Yesterday was my birthday. One of the presents was the CD Sign no more of Mumford & Sons. Mumford & Sons is one of the sensations of 2010. In no time their concert in the HMH was sold out. They performed with The Crow Medicine Show which i saw on Take Root 2010 in Groningen.

Mumford & Sons are inspired by folk, rock, country and bluegrass. The Group's members are Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane. They play playing together since 2007. By late autumn 2007, the band was writing songs and playing shows frequently, leading to a gig at 2008's Glastonbury Festival.
I'll listen to their CD Sign No More and inform you the coming week.

When I'm driving to my work or to home I'm listening to my CD's. Today Redwing from Redwing. Great.

Redwing was a band from Sacramento, CA. The band evolved out of the New Breed and later Glad, which included Timothy B. Schmit (Poco, the Eagles) in the lineup. After Schmit left in 1970 to join Poco, his replacement in the band was Andrew Samuels. The other members of Redwing were Tom Phillips, Ron Floegal, and George Hullin. In early 1970 the band cut its first album, Redwing, for United Artists. On this record many grat country rock songs.

Gillian Welch was born in 1967 in Manhattan and grew up in West Los Angeles. It was as a child that she became fascinated by bluegrass and early country music. Gillian Welch is now living in Nashville.With her partner Dave Rawlings.

Gillian Welch's debut album is Revival. Listening to "Orphan Girl" and "Annabelle," and "Pass you by." I believe she played "One more dollar" on Take Root 2010.

On Take Root 2010 I've seen fantastic shows Dave Rawlings Machine with Gilian Welch from Nashville (Tennessee), Musee Mecanique from Portland (Oregon). Due to the Take Root schedule I've missed Wilco and Carrie Rodriquez.

I was amazed anout Black Moutain, too.

Next year again with Calexico and Iron & Wine with band. Without is borrowing.

Each woman has had a storied career, marked by intensely emotional vocals, songs that dig deeper towards the heart of the human condition and very different career trajectories, yet at their roots Grammy-winner Shelby Lynne and Oscar-nominated Allison Moorer are sisters -- and the common blood is what binds their disparate kinds of roots music together like a mandrake root.

After years of enlisting each other's help on various projects and one-off shows, Lynne and Moorer are going "Side by Side" for a short run of tour dates this fall. Beginning October 3rd at Golden Gate State Park, the women will first join voices as part of San Francisco's storied Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. They will then pick up for later in the fall for a November 27 show at Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, NY, a pair of shows Nov. 29-30 at the DC area's legendary Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia and ultimately bringing it all back home for a Dec. 4 show at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, AL.

"I am so happy Sissy and I are able to do this," says New York resident Moorer, recently a mother to John Henry. "We've talked about it for so many years, now we're finally going to."

Moorer released the critically-heralded Crows, produced by longtime collaborator RS Fields, in February. Lynne released her Tears, Lies and Alibis, the debut release on her own Everso Records. In addition to the CD release, hardcore fans will be able to buy a vinyl version Oct. 19 -- the week after Lynne releases her seasonal Merry Christmas

Lynne who came to prominence as a teenager whose fiery vocal presence suggested classic country divas, but that flame was tempered with a definite darkness She has explored far beyond the mainstream country Billy Sherrill and Bob Montgomery thought she was perfect for. The intense vocalist has made swing records Temptation singer/songwriter records Love, Shelby, a wonderful Dusty Springfield tribute Just A Little LOving and her seminal I Am Shellby Lynne.

Moorer, who would sing background vocals for her sister as a college student, took a subtler approach -- mining a decidedly roots country that yielded the metaphoric exploration of a theme The Duel, the decidedly cheerful Steve Earle-produced Getting Somewhere, the Buddy Miller-produced covers collection Mockingbird and the recent noir consideration of adult womanhood Crows and as Oscar-nomination for "Soft Place To Fall," the theme from Robert Redford's "The Horse Whisperer."

The shows are slated to be intimate, acoustic and -- knowing the sisters -- hilarious. With the kinetics of Lynne's voice and Moorer's more velvety lushness, there is no texture, color or form the sisters can't bring to life -- and finally, two decades after Lynne stepped on the national stage, the world can experience what makes these siblings such singular, but immense talents.

Adain Dixie Chicken was the peak of the concert. They also performed other songs from their fantastic CD from 1973. One of the best ever made.

Mary Gauthier, born March 11, 1962 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American folk singer-songwriter. Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Gauthier was adopted by an Italian Catholic couple in Thibodaux, Louisiana At age 15, she stole her parents' car and ran away from home, and spent the next several years in drug rehabilitation, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in a police cell.[2] Struggling to deal with being adopted and her sexuality, she used drugs and alcohol.[2] These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on. Spurred on by friends, she enrolled at Louisiana State University as a philosophy major, dropping out during her senior year. After attending the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, she opened a Cajun restaurant in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, Dixie Kitchen (also the eponymous title of her first album).[3] Mary ran, and cooked at, the restaurant for eleven years. Led by the gifted songwriting, impeccable playing, and honeyed harmonies of vocalists/guitarists Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the Jayhawks' shimmering blend of country, folk, and bar band rock made them one of the most widely acclaimed artists to emerge from the alternative country scene. The group sprang up in 1985 out of the fertile musical community of Minneapolis, MN, where Olson had been playing standup bass in a rockabilly band called Stagger Lee. His desire to write and perform his own country-folk material soon prompted him to begin a solo career, which he launched after enlisting Marc Perlman, the guitarist for a local band called the Neglecters, to become Olson's bassist. After the addition of drummer Norm Rogers, the group began booking shows, playing its first gig in front of a small crowd of less than a dozen people. One of those patrons, however, was Gary Louris, a veteran of the local bands Safety Last and Schnauzer. He and Olson began talking after the show; by the end of the evening, Louris -- who was famed locally for his innovative, pedal steel-like guitar sound -- had become a member of the group, which eventually adopted the name the Jayhawks.

Drawing on influences like Gram Parsons, the Louvin Brothers, Tim Hardin, and Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan, the Jayhawks quickly became a local favorite, honing their sound in Twin Cities clubs before releasing their eponymous debut in 1986. Issued in a pressing of just a few thousand copies, the album was well received by those who heard it; a major recording deal did not follow, however, so the bandmembers continued to polish their craft live, with more and more of their songs bearing writing credits belonging to both Olson and Louris. In October 1988, after a lineup change that saw the departure of Rogers (who joined the Cows) followed by the addition of drummer Thad Spencer, Louris was nearly killed in an auto accident, and the Jayhawks went on hiatus. At much the same time, however, executives at the Minneapolis independent label Twin/Tone decided to issue the demos the group had been stockpiling over the past few years, and after some overdubbing and remixing, Blue Earth appeared in 1989. Richer in sound and more complex in its themes and concerns, the record's release brought the group considerable attention, and also brought Louris back into the fold. After another drummer switch (Spencer for Ken Callahan), the band hit the road for a national tour.

The Jayhawks were signed to major label American Records after producer George Drakoulias heard The Blue Earth playing in the background during a phone call to Twin/Tone's offices. With Drakoulias in the producer's seat, the band recorded its breakthrough album, Hollywood Town Hall, in 1991; a mainstay of critics' annual "best-of" lists, the album generated the alternative radio hits "Waiting for the Sun," "Take Me with You (When You Go)," and "Settled Down Like Rain." After a tour that saw the permanent addition of Minneapolis pianist Karen Grotberg, the individual bandmembers guested on albums from Counting Crows, Soul Asylum, Maria McKee, Joe Henry, and others. Before recording the fourth Jayhawks album, Callahan departed, and was replaced by session drummer Don Heffington. The resulting record, 1995's Tomorrow the Green Grass, is a beautiful collection of songs led off by the elegiac single "Blue," the recipient of significant airplay. A tour followed, but after some months on the road, Olson announced he was quitting the band.

In 1997, the Jayhawks -- now consisting of Louris, Perlman, Grotberg, and drummer Tim O'Reagan -- released the album Sound of Lies. Grotberg left the band in early 2000, and was replaced by ex-DAG keyboardist Jen Gunderman for the band's sixth album, Smile. A move to a new label (Lost Highway) in 2002 brought about more changes in the band's ever evolving lineup, leaving Louris, Perlman, and O'Reagan (assisted by newcomer Stephen McCarthy on guitar) to craft 2003's rootsier Rainy Day Music. After that, the band ceased operating under the moniker, though Olson and Louris toured together in 2005 and 2006 billed as "From the Jayhawks: An Evening with Mark Olson and Gary Louris, Together Again," eventually releasing an album together in 2009 called Ready for the Flood. That same year, the band released Music from the North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology. In 2010 the band reissued its 1986 Bunkhouse Album on Lost Highway Records.

One of the founding members of Moby Grape, Peter Lewis is undoubtedly one of the most underrated musicians and contributors to come out of the 1960's rock revolution. Lewis was born into a show business family, and is the son of a renowned actress, the late Loretta Young. While in high school, Lewis played guitar and sang in a pop/..rock band called The Cornells and also rubbed elbows with Ricky Nelson, among others. After attending military school and a brief stint in the Air Force, Lewis was, for a short time, a commercial pilot for Shell Oil. After seeing an early appearance by The Byrds, Lewis was inspired enough to make music his primary focus. "I would have stayed a pilot too if it wasn't for the Byrds. It was at the Long Beach Arena where I went with my girlfriend to see the Rolling Stones that it happened. Being in the pilot's program had completely absorbed me, and I had spent the last two years doing nothing but flying, or studying about flying. Music had been put in the background. It had no pull on me, because in my isolated situation, I still thought the music scene in America was pretty lame. That all changed when the opening band stepped on stage that night at the Stones concert. Of course, it was the Byrds." It was during this period that Lewis began to develop what was to become his signature fingerpicking guitar style. Although galvanized by Roger McGuinn's playing, Lewis chose to explore the style on the six-string electric, and this set him apart from many other guitarists at the time who were merely imitating McGuinn, utilizing 12-string Rickenbackers. For over a year, Lewis and his new band, Peter And The Wolves played up and down the West Coast. Sometime in 1966, Lewis began playing with another underestimated musical genius, Joel Scott Hill, and through him, Lewis met bassist/vocalist Bob Mosley and the Moby Grape odyssey began. Lewis' contributions to the band were great and many. Aside from furnishing the band with some of their best and most accessible rockers such as "Fall On You" and "Goin' Down To Texas" , he also had an introspective, psychologically probing and psychedelic ballad style, and this is where his originality and talent truly shine. This is best represented on songs such as "He", "That Lost Horizon", "Horse Out In The Rain" and "Sittin' By The Window" (which be reprised brilliantly on his 1995 self-titled solo album). He also penned the profound "Changes, Circles Spinning", which can be seen as an ode to the end of the 1960's, and was part of Joan Baez' late 60's live repertoire.Between brief Moby Grape reunions in the 70's, Lewis and another Grape co-founder, the late Skip Spence, were instrumental in helping assemble The Doobie Brothers, as well as assisting in getting them signed to Warner Bros. Records. Lewis was rumored to have an offer to join the band early on with Spence, but when his former band mate decided not to pursue this, Lewis declined as well. In 1995, he released his only solo album to date, Peter Lewis, on the German-based Taxim Records label. Produced by former Doobies guitarist John McFee, the record is a penetrating example of Lewis' unique talent, as well as his musical growth. He has spent the last few years recording tracks for a follow up album, and still sporadically performs live as a solo artist and occasionally with some of the surviving members of Moby Grape. At his solo shows, as if to bring things full circle, he often performs a brilliant version of Gene Clark's "Set You Free This Time", which was originally on The Byrds Turn, Turn, Turn album. ~ Matthew Greenwald

Richie Hayward, the drummer and a founding member of Little Feat, a celebrated rock band that arrived on the music scene in Los Angeles with its distinctively eclectic sound in the early 1970s, has died. He was 64.
Hayward, who had liver cancer, died Thursday of complications from pneumonia in a hospital near Vancouver, Canada, said Bridget Nolan, a publicist for the band.
"He was a great drummer, and he was very much integral to Little Feat's sound," singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, who first met Hayward about 40 years ago, told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. "It's hard to imagine another drummer making that music because it's very inventive."

Formed in 1969 _ its original members including singer-songwriter and guitarist Lowell George, keyboardist Bill Payne, bassist Roy Estrada and Hayward _ Little Feat became known for its mix of rock, country, blues, folk, jazz and funk.

The band's self-titled 1971 debut album featured songs such as "Strawberry Flats," "Willin'," and "Hamburger Midnight."
"Through its first five albums, Little Feat has been thought of as a cult band, as influential musicians' musicians and as one of Warner Bros. Records' 'prestige acts,'" Richard Cromelin, former Times pop music writer, wrote in 1977. "Critical praise has been lavish, particularly in England where the L.A.-based band is regularly hailed as the premier American group of the decade and major rock stars like Elton John proclaim its brilliance."
And yet, Cromelin wrote, "the cash registers have been excruciatingly silent.
The band, whose "Dixie Chicken" was one of their best-known songs, broke up after George died of a heart attack at age 34 while on a solo tour in 1979. But the band reunited in 1988.

"I never thought we'd get back together," Hayward told the Intelligence Journal, a Lancaster, Pa., newspaper in 2004. "Everyone had gone their separate ways. It seemed like everybody was going to continue doing that. We were all doing OK, but we weren't doing our own thing like we are now, which is much better. It's what we all kind of secretly wanted."
Hayward's "deep, funky groove and vibrant rock 'n' roll energy" _ as an online obituary in Modern Drummer put it _ led to his playing drums on numerous recording sessions and live performances with artists such as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Robert Palmer, Robert Plant and Bob Seger
Born Feb. 6, 1946, in Clear Lake, Iowa, Hayward began playing drums as a child and moved to California at 19 in 1964. Two years later, he read an ad in the L.A. Free Press that said, "Drummer Wanted _ Must Be Freaky" and joined George's band called the Factory.
Hayward also played briefly with the Fraternity of Man before joining Little Feat.
"My style has grown with the band," he said in a 1995 interview with Modern Drummer. "It started out heavily influenced by blues, rock 'n' roll, and jazz. Then it got more specific as I got into other kinds of American folk music and other roots music.
"I discovered New Orleans along the way, and that made a big difference _ it loosened me up."
A year ago, Hayward announced that he had been diagnosed with liver disease. His last public performance was July 11, when he sat in with Little Feat at the Vancouver Island Music Fest.

"He's really been a beacon to a whole generation of younger drummers," said Browne, who performed with other musicians at one of the benefit concerts held to help pay for Hayward's medical bills. "He was really loved; he will be missed."

Hayward's survivors include his wife, Shauna; and a son, Severin.

Jerry Miller is an American musician who has accomplished a great deal since his birth in 1943. As well as being an extremely accomplished guitarist, he sings and has written many songs. Some of these tracks have been for his own solo career, others for either The Jerry Miller Band or Moby Grape which is a band founded in San Francisco the 1960s. Jerry Miller was the lead guitarist, although it was not uncommon for the two other guitarists to also step up and take the lead.

The Jerry Miller band is still very active today with Jerry at the helm, Darin Williams on drums, Kim Workman on Bass and Tom Murphy. There have been many different accomplished musicians that have played with the band over the years.

Through his career Jerry Miller has played with some of the worlds musical great including Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few. Clapton had said that Miller was the best guitar player in the world. A lifetime of musical memorabilia that belonged to Miller was lost when his house was flooded, this included recordings with Hendrix and also some with Robert plant from the great Led Zeppelin.

At a time when anyone playing Coldplay-esque songs on acoustic guitars is labelled "nu folk", it's worth reminding ourselves of the purpose of the genre.

And who better to do this than the original "new Bob Dylan" – although these days Loudon Wainwright III sounds more like the old Bob Dylan than the new Bob Dylan does. Try to keep up.
The problem, of course, is that as soon as you start bandying about phrases such as "the purpose of folk", you run the risk of sounding like that bloke who called Dylan "Judas" for daring to push the envelope. Point is, the times have now a'changed to such a degree that it's nice to hear one of the originals of the 1960s folk scene get back to the idea of making an album that simply and effectively addresses the issues of the day.
10 Songs for the New Depression clocks in at around 30 minutes. In that short space of time (he has never needed more than a couple of minutes to make his point: see "Tonya's Twirls" for proof), Wainwright can make you laugh, nod in agreement, shake your fist in despair and want to sing along to a set of songs as focused as last year's Charlie Poole Project, although clearly written at pace.
"What in God's name is going on?/ All I can do is play this song" he sings on opener "Times is Hard", setting the tone for an album that offers no answers, only songs.

Accompanying himself on guitar, banjo or ukulele, that focus of subject matter finds Wainwright in better lyrical form than he has been in for some time. The songs are funny and sad because they are true. And if anyone is left in any doubt, the sleevenotes add a personal touch. The accompanying text to "House" – about a couple forced to stay together because they can't sell their home – for instance, sees Wainwright admitting he's "remained relatively unscathed by the New Depression though I do own a home in Southern California that I am unable to sell at present". The state of his current marriage he neglects to mention.

Obama, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and Alan Greenspan all get mentions and, even if nothing else about folk music grabs you, you have to admire LWIII's honesty and humour throughout.

'I guess so. I think my mother more than anyone knew the importance of inspiration. If it was occurring, you had to use it. I felt blessed that I was able to be with her in the final month.

'She very much led the way for all of us and it was a lesson in grace and nobility. It's funny because, on the one hand, she didn't really want to hear me practising my new album, because it was making her sad [the album is an elegy to his dying mother].

'She knew she wouldn't be around when I was touring it. It was like: "This is the album he's going to be performing when I'm dead." So she very gently asked me not to play so much.' It is a touching comment: a son's desire to win his dying mother's approval coupled with an endearing lack of self-awareness. [Telegraph]

As one of the original purveyors of garage punk and psychedelic rock, Roky Erickson's status as a true innovator of his generation is already set in stone. As a founder member and main songwriter with The 13th Floor Elevators, his creative zenith may have taken place over four decades ago but the three studio albums bearing the Elevators' name still stands the test of time today.

Indeed, listening back to the likes of 'Slip Inside This House' from 1967's Easter Everywhere (covered by Primal Scream on their Screamadelica opus, though not featured here) and 'Roller Coaster' from its predecessor The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators - likewise re-interpreted by Spacemen 3 on their 1986 debut Sound Of Confusion, it's hard to envisage either of those bands or many others that formed in their wake existing without the influence of Erickson and the Elevators.

Whether by coincidence or otherwise, Erickson's first new material in over a decade has also arrived this month, the Okkervil River accompanying True Love Cast Out All Evil having already received a highly favourable 9/10 on these very pages. Here, the excellent Sonic Cathedral imprint has pulled together an impressive array of artists obviously in awe of Erickson's work to create a startling tribute that collects 13 interpretations of his most feted achievements both with the Elevators and beyond.

The opening 'Roller Coaster', a live performance featuring Erickson himself on guest vocals with The Black Angels ably sets the scene. Although over half of this album is culled from The Psychedelic Sounds... era, very few versions stick to the template of the original recordings. A Place To Bury Strangers turn 'Tried To Hide' into a death disco noisefest while All The Saints' opulent take on 'Don't Fall Down' and Sarabeth Tucek's dreamy vocal throughout 'Splash 1 (Now I'm Home)' gracefully re-evaluate the original songs rather than simply pay homage. Likewise Lower Heaven's 'Fire Engine' and Hush Arbors' 'Dr Doom' (from 1969's Bull Of The Woods) both typify the boisterous spirit of the Elevators whilst taking on a mantle of their own.

It's the introduction of the big guns towards the album's final third though that really set pulses racing. Cheval Sombre's take on 'You Don't Love Me Yet' and Le Volume Courbe's reading of 'I Love The Living You', featuring contributions from Sonic Boom and Kevin Shields respectively, both illustrate the formidable aspects of Erickson's largely underrated solo work. Couple these with Black Acid's (aka Richard Fearless and friends) nine-minute excursion through 'Unforced Peace' and the closing I Break Horses bringing things back into 2010 with their interpretation of recent single 'Goodbye Sweet Dreams' and you're left looking at one of this year's most inspired compilations thus far, that acts not just as a fitting tribute to Roky Erickson, but also a dazzling showcase of the legacy his music has spawned ever since
